Day 2 Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster → Yuchang Earthen Building → Hekeng Tulou Cluster → Ancient Taxia Village
After breakfast, your first stop will be the Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster. It consists of one square building and four rounded earthen structures. It is among the most exquisite and well preserved Hakka strongholds. The Yuchang Earthen Building is among the most ancient tulou still in use. The most notable feature of this five-story earthen structure is its skewed pillars. The most severe one has a 15-degree tilt to it. One of the six tulou clusters that make up the Fujian Tulou World Heritage Site is Hekeng Tulou Cluster. This true Hakka village is less frequented by tourists and is filled with variously shaped mud dwellings. In the film Mulan, it serves as Mulan’s “hometown”.
Next go to see Taxia Village, a characteristic Hakka village in Nanjing County situated in a valley. Like a local Hakka tea farmer, you may gather tea leaves at a nearby plantation from April to November and learn how to prepare them. The tea you prepare can travel with you. Additionally, you are able to sample some black tea that the nearby farmers have previously brewed.
